Most of the musicians on this enjoyable CD did not actually play much with Eddie Condon (bassist Bob Haggart excepted), but the music is very much in the Condon Chicago jazz tradition, and cornetist Ed Polcer led the house band at the last Condon's club. With a front line also including trombonist Bob Havens, clarinetist Allan Vaché, and baritonist John Barnes along with the fine swing pianist Johnny Varro and the fiery drummer Butch Miles, the octet romps through a dozen songs (most of them Dixieland-oriented) during this 1993 concert for the German Nagel-Heyer label. Highlights include "California Here I Come," "Fidgety Feet," "Wherever There's Love," and "Hindustan."

Butch Miles (born July 4, 1944) is an American jazz drummer. He has played with Dave Brubeck, Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr., and Frank Sinatra.
Miles, who cites Buddy Rich and Jo Jones as favorite drummers, was Mel Tormé's drummer for 3 1/2 years and it was Tormé and Buddy Rich who recommended him to Count Basie.
Miles was with the Count Basie Orchestra from 1975 to 1979, and from 1997 to 2007. ... more

I love this ENTIRE album!!! How to chose a favourite (Well Read Baby?!) Keenan's album is a tour de force of songs that were written now, but he's so totally internalized the style that they sound like they are from another century! The musicianship, arrangements, and the voice of Laura Windley are great. This is my fave vocal showing from Laura, too! (and she has lots of great records) Can't recommend this highly enough Alex P

Ever since I discovered Mr. Zimmerman and his nostalgically delicious flavor of jazz— I have been reborn! First, to find jazz is very rare indeed on Bandcamp, but then to find the virtuoso of Jacob mastering both clarinet and saxophone is a surprise indeed! He reminds me at once of the masters from yesteryear...the hot stomp savoy blues of Sidney Bechet to the cool world of Jimmy Giuffre. Hooray, for Zimmerman!
